Our Story
In the early 1900s, the Panama Canal was almost built in Nicaragua. Plans were drawn for a route from the Río San Juan into Lake Nicaragua and across the strip of land between San Juan del Sur and Rivas — the very area where Reserve & Ecolodge Morgan’s Rock stands today. Although the Nicaraguan route was approved by the U.S. Senate, political and economic interests ultimately favored Panama. Morgan’s Rock is named in honor of Senator John Tyler Morgan, the leading advocate of the Nicaraguan canal and “the canal that never was.”
